The Newtown Community & Cultural Centre, tucked away behind the bustling main street of Newtown in Wellington, is a veritable hive of activity and out-of-the-box projects, including the Wellington Timebank and the Tool Library. Many of the activities the Centre supports or undertakes bring together a social justice and environmental kaupapa by connecting individuals, organisations and community groups through the principles of sharing, collaboration, inclusiveness and accessibility. We were lucky enough to speak to the Centre’s coordinators, Renee Rushton and Eryn Gribble, who stepped us through several of the projects running out of the Newtown Community & Cultural Centre, and what it really means to create a true and inclusive ‘community’ centre in one of Wellington’s most diverse and unique central suburbs.
